Skagit Adventist Academy (SAA) had the priviledge of going to Nicaragua on a mission trip this last March. We worked on the campus of Fountain of Life Children’s Village for International Children’s Care. The campus already has several houses, a volunteer center and a dairy. Our job was to put in the concrete floor of a warehouse.
When we got there, we all had doubts that we would be able to complete the project. The work was tidious and boring and the weather was extremely hot, but everyone kept smiles on their faces and worked hard. By the end of the week and a half, we had completed the entire floor. We even had time to visit the beach a few times and experience the local culture.
Eighteen volunteers went on the trip, which included students in grades 8-11, parents, teachers, our principal, a youth pastor, a nurse and another pastor who is also a dentist. The pastor-dentist cleaned the teeth of all the children at the orphanage as well as some people in the community. Several students from SAA helped with the cleanings and even with some extractions.
There were many tears when it was time to say goodbye to the children. SAA students expressed how they have a different perspective on life now and how they hadn’t realized the way other people live.
