Communicating Good News

The Communication department has three purposes: to tell stories of how God is at work in western Washington; to provide communication resources for departments, churches, schools, and ministries; and to inform constituents about local, conference, and worldwide Adventist news, events, and resources.

Telling Stories
Washington Conference has a variety of outlets for sharing stories and news reports. Tell us what's happening in your church or school!

Here's an outline for developing a basic, 200-225 word news story:
1)  Informative headline (Subject, Verb, Descriptor)
2)  Creative/Interesting summary introduction (who, what, when, where)
3)  Quick background statement (why)
4)  Quote from leader (include person’s connection to the story)
5)  Event details (how)
6)  Quote from participant (include person’s connection to the story)
7)  Wrap up (no opinion summary)
8) Author byline (include your name, connection to story, email address, & phone number in case the editors need to contact you)

Submit your Gleaner story here.

Not a writer? Fill out this form, and we'll help you put a story together.

Providing Resources
Looking for website guidance? Need advice for marketing your ministry?  The Communication department provides training workshops and resources in media relations, creative writing, publication writing, and website management. The department provides as-needed consultation for departments, churches, schools, and ministries.

Informing Constituents

The Communication department distributes stories, event information, ministry resources, and church news through a variety of low- or no-cost traditional and new media platforms including Gleaner contributions, bulletin inserts, leadership emails, print newsletters, electronic newsletters, web content for washingtonconference.org, blogs, and social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.

Need an announcement distributed to Washington Conference churches? Email the Communication department. Include the name of the event, a brief description, date/time, location, fees/registration/deadlines, and contact person (phone number, email or website). A flyer may be included, but is not required.
Website Ministry
Washington Conference of Seventh-day Adventists encourages churches and schools to have an active web presence. Some conferences require churches and schools to use a particular web site provider; Washington Conference does not. We feel it is more important to have an active web presence, rather than to use a particular service. >See more information about website providers.
